Cataracts and surgical Co-management
Cataracts are a clouding and hardening of the natural lens inside the eye. They can occur anytime during your lifespan, but are most common as we get older, especially over the age of 60. Early symptoms of cataracts are trouble night driving, changes in glasses prescription, or constant fog/haze over your vision. Our expert care team can help make the diagnosis of cataracts and guide you in the next best step.
We are involved not only in diagnosing and managing cataracts but also in the post-operative care once surgery is done by an ophthalmologist.
After Surgery:
Your vision is often blurred right after surgery due to corneal swelling and a shift in your glasses prescription. Most people have to use a set of drop after surgery to prevent infection and inflammation. Your surgeon will prescribe their preferred medication for after surgery.
Normal activity can be resumed 1 -2 weeks after surgery but this can vary depending on several factors and how quickly you heal. Each cataract surgery case is unique and results will vary from patient to patient.
Some possible but very rare complications can arise and you should call the doctor with any sudden vision changes or severe pain. Most patients can drive 24 hours after surgery and often to the 1 day appointment at our office. Everyone will still need glasses for certain tasks, some patients will have to continue to wear progressive lenses (no-line bifocals), while other may just need reading glasses in low light. It depends on many factors including eye health, what type of lens is used and prior glasses prescription.
